This post is to all of my fellow peeps who have hypertension. I'm 41 years old and have been diagnosed with having hypertension. I am predisposed to it/have family history, but I think me being overweight caused the problem to surface at an earlier age than my other family members. I've taken care of the weight problem and have lost sixty pounds. I work out regularly (1.5 hrs x 4 days per week, every week, including strength training). Due to my improved fitness, my resting heart rate is between 52-58 bpm most readings (vs. 100 when I was overweight). I am also taking low dose losartan which has minimal pesky side effects. Despite all of this, lately my pressure has been 140-150/100 or high 90s. It won't seem to go down and it's kind of frustrating. I don't want to increase the medication because I frankly don't want to deal with lots of side effects.
I'm active, I eat healthy for the most part, lost weight, I take the drugs. Why can't I consistently have 120/80? Can I just "live with" the borderline readings?
I have idiopathic HB. No family history, eat right, not overweight, don't smoke, exercise 5 days a week.
Tried smallest does of Quinaprel which didn't completely get it down, up the dose and it's been pretty good.

Losartan is an ARB...maybe ask your doctor if you could try a different type, like an ACE inhibitor or calcium channel blocker? Or up your losartan dose a bit?
I've been on lisinopril for 30+ years, along with a low dose of HCTZ, and my BP is 115/65 most of the time. If I didn't take my meds, my BP would run about 190/100 (I know this because one of my doctors took me off meds about 15 years ago since my BP readings were so good, ha, silly doctor).
My weight has always been good, I'm on the slender side, and weight doesn't have anything to do with my blood pressure problem. It just runs in my family.
Sometimes you have to adjust your dose/type of medication until you get good readings.
There are other causes of high blood pressure....if no medications are working, then you need to be checked for other reasons, like narrowing of arteries.
After open heart,I was put on medotartrate and 2.5 lisinprolol, everything fine,120/40 60 pulse generarly for 6 years.
My doctor for over 20 years was happy along with my cardiologist with annual check up's.
We made move because of age and now have new cardiologist,I did have argument with him on first visit when I did not approve of his changing my meds.He said my lisinprolol at 2.5 was not a consideration to control BP,I came into appointment at 132/40.It is now a year later and I am not happy,130/60 pulse 75 and sometimes 100/58 and even had a reading of 98/60,I am on lisinprolol HCTZ 10/12 5mg.This my choice, same as wife, had to stop nightmare.
This is a long story short,I had bad trouble with his choices of BP meds, the worst was 210/100 this over a 6 month period

Reason: added infoo
I am on Micardia 40mg/HTZ and it is not as good at keeping my BP down as lisiniprol. I have messaged my primary care manager if we can go back. I have one full Rx of lisiniprol left, I may go off the Micardis for a day or two, then switch..
