Spending $20+ a ton on the boxes. Maybe I could make my own haircolor at home, it would need to cover the grey hair.

Some ideas below. Obviously, your natural hair color will determine what might or might not do what you want. BTW, a Google search brought this and other links up in seconds.

I was already blonde and came back from the pool one day with WHITE crunchy hair. My mother had a fit and I was banned from ever using it again.
I used to use henna when I was in my dark brown/auburn color phase. It works but is messy and will stain your skin.
And what's with the insane price increase of everyday hair dye recently? I always bought whatever was at the grocery store, Revlon or Clairol, for around $8-9 a box. Now they're all $15-18...wtf. I looked online and found them at a major retailer for $8-9 so they're getting my business now.

Coffee can also be used to dye skin/leather (including your own). Also as a fabric dye on its own or combined with some other color dyes to achieve darker results. BTDT.

I was blonde too, and used to use Sun In occasionally. Yeah, it was pretty harsh. I started using regular hydrogen peroxide (brown bottle, for disinfecting cuts and such) along with lemon juice. It seemed to be gentler on my hair, and it went really light in the sun. I loved it.
Exposure to copper or heavy chlorine in water can also turn hair greenish, if you want a non-natural color. I remember an episode from the show Diff'rent Strokes where the daughter washed her hair with rainwater collected in a copper bowl and her hair ended up green.

My mother rinsed her three little blonde girls' hair with lemon juice before we went outdoors to play in the summer sun. But she also slathered us with sunscreen before many other parents did!
