Takeoffs and Landings question. I've seen other threads about airport noise but none since 2014.
What neighborhoods are most impacted by the takeoffs and landings at PTI? And how far out do you have to live from the airport runway tracks to get the planes high enough to not be bothered by the noise? Often the planes circle around to get in position for the correct landing for that day's conditions, or they circle immediately after takeoff.
It seems people who live in areas that MUST be impacted act like it's no big deal, and I'm wondering if that's just confirmation bias on some of their parts. I just want to be able to sit outside and converse without taking breaks for aircraft activity.
Yes I did see that thread, and that was one that made me question trusting people's experiences. For example, it's hard to imagine The Cardinal NOT being pretty affected, yet posters in that thread say it's not a big deal.
Everyone's tolerance is unique, I understand, but the Triad is only going to grow I think, which means more flights. Also, FedEx could very easily ramp up operations.
Because flight takeoff and landing directions change, literally, with the wind, I'm not sure how I would personally test it, especially as we don't live in GSO, yet. So I'm looking for very honest assessments of the noise levels in the takeoff/landing paths, if possible. And thank you in advance!
I live 8 miles from the airport. My home is well insulated so I hear nothing while inside. I see and hear planes when I'm outside at times but it doesn't bother me. I'm off Battleground near Lowes. Your tolerance may be different.
I grew up off Lake Brandt Road, nearly directly under the landing path. I also lived in a dorm next to the railroad tracks at NC State. In both instances, you get used to the noise very quickly, and get to the point where only unusual noises/movements really catch your attention.
For PTI, typical operation due to prevailing winds is for landings to approach from the northeast (over NW Greensboro) and take off to the southwest (over N High Point). Occasionally, when the wind is out of the north or northeast (more common in winter), the direction will be reversed. I believe the tendency is for the longer runway (5R/23L) to be used more frequently by the larger planes, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong. I find takeoffs to be louder than landings.
