All everyone would talk about was how Greensboro or Charlotte was on their radar . .. now they all clawing to get back into Winston.. does make me wonder what the future does hold for Winston, once it grows as much as in can and fully developes.. I wonder if the final outcome will be big enough for people to stay or if they will eventually desire a Bigger City ? I still say they should scrap thruway shopping center,, build up and restart that as mixed use . Same with Hanes mall too... scrap and rebuild.
I’ve always wished that Wake Forest was woven into the city’s fabric better like UNCG and A&T are. They are close to downtown and fairly walkable. Wake Forest and HPU are like gated communities cut off from the rest of their city. But Wake is really making a difference downtown in recent years. I’m happy to see that.

I don't think Winston will ever get that big city feel. The lack of an airport means no big white-collar jobs in bulk like what RDU, Charlotte, or even G-boro on a smaller level have

I wouldn't say never. PTI really serves both Greensboro and Winston-Salem and is little further from Winston-Salem than RDU is from Raleigh.

Not saying Winston-Salem will ever be a "big city" (unlikely, at least in our lifetimes)... but if one of Greensboro or Winston-Salem were to become "big", I'd put my money on Winston-Salem.

Winston-Salem did enjoy a brief span in the early 20th century as the state's largest city after surpassing Wilmington with Charlotte surpassing Winston-Salem very shortly afterwards.

Not really expecting either city to become "big" a la present-day Charlotte in my lifetime, but I think Winston-Salem particular has a certain appeal that could really make it a beneficiary from the pandemic-induced increasing shift to remote work. In 2020 or last year, I think I may have seen it listed as a city witnessing marked growth in its population of transplanted remote workers.

Winston-Salem also gets a lot of attention as an attractive retirement destination. It’s foothill adjacent location really is a great asset.

Regarding the lack of an international airport in the county is a minor ding if handled correctly. 20 minutes to PTI is nothing. Parts of Minneapolis are over 20 minutes to MSP, yet the Region as a whole benefits from having a shared international airport. Parts of DC are 30 minutes to DCA, but the city says it has a major airport close by.

Exactly. In fact, it's fairly common for airports to be 20 minutes or more from anything of consequence in the metro it serves. Hartsfield Airport is 25 minutes from midtown Atlanta (interestingly, the airport takes up more land than the city itself). DC is served by several airports. Dulles and BWI are each about 30-40 min away though Reagan is across the water.

Even if Greensboro didn't exist at all and PTI served Winston-Salem, its location wouldn't be a huge anomaly.

What in the world!? Hartsfield-Jackson is approximately 5000 acres, while the COA is ~87,000 acres (approximately 136 sq. miles).

The airport is larger than HAPEVILLE, GA (where it technically/geographically sits), but whatever source you pulled that one from wasn't clear or you didn't translate it appropriately.

Yeah... I'm not sure where I read it. I remember fact checking it and it checked out. Maybe it referred to midtown only? I have no idea. I'm going to go edit the original post or delete and repost without that nugget.

Too bad there's not an edit feature after a little bit of time on here (what's the logic behind that anyway?).
