While I'm thoroughly against the govt involvement with incentives and mandates in what should be left up to the free market, there has been an awful lot of fake news coming from both sides...
...Just this past week, the conservative press (what there is of it) has been gloating that Hertz is drastically down-sizing it's EV fleet, for instance-- but they're misinterpreting this action...It's been taken because Tesla has slashed the prices of new EVs, so the rental fleet's value on the used car market has been undermined, Hertz will cut their losses by accruing the tax advantages of partially selling out their fleet at a loss, not because demand for EV rentals is down.
One of the biggest negative points about EVs is the lack of supporting infrastructure like charging stations-- but ICE automobiles were on the market for 20 yrs before the first dedicated gas station went into operation and almost 30 yrs before paved rural roads were starting to be built....
..and one of the biggest positive arguments in favor of EVs is their advantage to the environment- That's a bit of thoroughly fake news too.
if anyone actually reads Hertz's financial statement on the EV sell off, the majority of those Tesla's were coming from their EV alliance programs. It really had nothing to do with their counter rental fleet. Those vehicles are remaining in inventory. They are talking about the forty somewhat thousand Teslas that were made available through alliances and those are the one racking up 80,000+ miles in 2 years, suffering constant body damages, have dog tired interiors and pretty much are no-frills. Like any vehicle on the market, a vehicle used by Joe for routine use is not the same as if that vehicle was used by Fred as an Uber or Jill doing Door dash or instacart, or Swanky Name Casino & Resort letting their guest borrow it when they like. Too much emphasis is being made to make it sound like it's about EV's when in fact it would be the same as if B2B leasing was selling 40,000 Chevy ice Malibu's that were used as taxis.

And how many ICE cars or trucks wouldn't start in that extreme cold?
True, but you replace a bum battery in an ICE for $100...but it costs $10,000 to replace it in the EV.
The nice thing about horses is that they always start fast no matter how cold it gets...The bad thing is that they still consume fuel and produce waste even when not in use.
