Have to add another "hardest part" for me, control not to buy too many plants.
Yesterday went to the "good" local-owned nurseries out of town and bought too many plants because they were GORGEOUS.
Petunias $2.50 for 4, verbena, salvia (LOVE salvia), big patio tomato for $4 because it will produce much earlier than my tiny seedlings.
Both nurseries were overflowing with flowering plants and people buying them, I'm not alone in my need for plants lol.
Happiness not needing to buy veggie starts (growing at home) which had expensive prices OMG.
I was looking at my bags of mulch and thinking and I got to wondering what would happen if I took my garden fork and jabbed a whole bunch of holes in the bag, then flipped it over in situ and just cut the top plastic off? The plastic underneath would have drainage holes and be retrievable once the mulch on top became soil for new weeds.
We live out in BFE so to go to town is a 1 hr drive. I just posted a thread asking if Bear or Dear Poop would make good manure, we'll see. Anyhow probably the cost to drive into town, and buy the pay dirt. We would prefer to make our own as we did in the past.
I have a huge broken down compost pile but used Horse Manure and later read, it's not the greatest. Yet I found a ton of volunteers I buried in one of the garden beds.
Just discussing about putting down thick plastic ground cover lining and ordering rock. Think it’s best to put down two layers of plastic ground cover then rock.
It’s too much work to keep up with the weeds !
Also, to answer about the hardest part of gardening. I think sometimes it’s nice to buy one plant that you don’t usually buy and give it a try. I bought a vine last year just to try it out and now it’s full and beautiful !

No you are not! I can definitely relate to this, and usually 'lose control' whenever I go to a plant nursery. This year I'm helping a nearby farm for the season - they have a 30 foot hoop house set up as a heated greenhouse for all the seedlings and I've had visions of setting up a cot and camping in there. The smell and quality of the air is so stimulating, I would love to spend some nights sleeping with the plants.
My other weakness is buying seeds, especially in the middle of January when all the seed companies publish that year's catalogs. I call the catalogs "garden porn". Some have stopped producing printed catalogs and have digital PDFs only - it's not the same. Johnny's Seeds still mails out catalogs and I pay more for that resource, but it's worth it.
The urge to buy plants gets to us all. I went in to buy a bosc pear and needed my son and his pickup truck to carry the tree home. While we were there we walked past the Japanese maple trees and now my son is the happy owner of 6 Japanese maple trees that he hadn't previously known that he wanted.
I get to walk past all the beautiful flowers because I started all of mine from seed this year. It's still hard to not buy any of them.

Look up gravel garden. I just recently saw/read about these, and they're gorgeous!
