Manet and Degas were rich, competitive, and often unpleasant. They also discovered new ways of seeing the people around them.

Manet has been paired with an artist who was both great and, on a formal level, astonishingly good. Vividness was Degas’s superpower—he had a schoolyard bully’s knack for noticing what was wrong with people and making sure everyone else saw.
