I've been hearing in the news about utility rate hikes in various places, mostly due to increases in fuel prices. Since EWEB gets most of our power from hydro and renewables, does that mean we are somewhat insulated from such rate hikes? Or are electricity rates based on national market or grid, so we all more or less suffer the same kinds of increases?

Here is everything you need to know about your electric and water rates.

Budget and Rate Information | EWEB

80% of Eugene's electricity comes from the Federal dams on the Columbia River. As you know there are proposals to remove many of those dams. That would significantly increase your electrical rates.

Also the Federal electricity is being shipped to California. Lights in California would go out if the Northwest grid did not support it. At some point California will make a bid for Federal electricity generated in the Northwest, probably by being willing to pay market prices.

IF the Federal government got rid of below market electricity sales that would dramatically increase Eugene's rates. Currently, BPA sells electricity at well below market rates...and it really does need to be increased dramatically to help save endangered salmon and steelhead runs.

But all those things are in the future. Looks like your bill is going up 3% next year for water and 3.7% for electricity.
