Technically George Santos won his race, but thanks to a bombshell report by the New York Times, and backlash from both parties, we could have a special election if he resigns after taking office in January

There are a few other threads on this one so will leave it to those until anything further happens, but will be interesting to keep an eye on. This is my district FWIW.

5 days until the swearing in ceremony. Wonder if George Santos will resign before the Jan 3rd noon swearing in. Surely the investigations have him sweating bullets. Perhaps legal counsel will tell him it's better to resign now.

According to Nassau County GOP officials Santos has stated he will not seek re-election in 2024. I haven't seen any official statement or word, so going to leave this off the list for now, but obviously one to keep an eye out on.

Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan has announced she will not seek re-election. Stabenow was first elected in 2000 and serving in her fourth term in the Senate. She also served two terms in the House prior to being elected to the Senate. This will open up a Senate seat in a swing state (albeit slightly Democratic leaning) and could be quite competitive. Trump did win Michigan in 2016, making him the first Republican to win it for President since George H.W Bush in 1988, though Biden did win it back in 2020.

Open Senate Seats
Currently two members of the Senate have decided not to seek re-election one Republican and one Democrat

Open Republican Senate Seats

1. Indiana Mike Braun- Running for Governor
Trump 56.9-40.9

Open Democratic Senate Seats
1. Michigan-Debbie Stabenow
Biden 50.6-47.8

*Note there will be a Special Election in Nebraska in 2024 for the last two years of Republican Ben Sasse's term, (who announced he will resign from the Senate at the end of the year). If whoever, gets appointed runs to finish the term, I will not include since it will technically be an Incumbent, if that person does not run, I will include (outgoing Governor Pete Ricketts announced he will seek the appointment, and while not yet confirmed the speculation is that Ricketts will be appointed and run in 2024).

Open House Seats
One member of Congress has announced he will not run for re-election and it is a Republican

Open Republican Seats in the House
1. WV-02 Alex Mooney- running for Senate
Trump 67.6-30.6

Special Elections
There is one upcoming Special Election in a previously held Democratic seat

Special Elections in a previously held Democratic seat

1. VA-04- Donald McEachin - passed away November 28th 2022, Special Election February 21 2023
Biden 67.2-31.5

With the new Congress the GOP holds a 222-212 advantage in the House with one vacancy. The Senate wil be a Democratic advantage either 51-49 or 50-49-1 depending on how Arizona Senator Krysten Sinema (who recently switched from Democrat to Independent) decides to Caucus. While not confirmed, it appears she will continue to Caucus with Democrats which would make it 51-49.

Thank you for maintaining this thread. I tried to repp you but the software says I need to spread the rep points around before circling back.

Debbie Stabenow's resignation opens up a pretty good opportunity for the Republican Party to pick up a seat in the US Senate. Although Michigan swung towards Biden in 2020, it was really more a swing away from Trump. 2022 swung even farther away, this time from Trumpism and the incredibly bad candidates that Trump endorsed.

Michigan is one of the most purple states that you'll find, and a sane and capable Republican could take this Senate seat. I can see one of the current or former Republican congressmen from Michigan seriously eyeballing their chances here.

Fred Upton and Pete Hoekstra immediately come to mind, although each is currently 70 years old. Peter Meijer is currently 34, but has only one term in the US House on his resume. Heck, 41 year old John James, newly elected to the US House, has in the past run for the Michigan Senate seat - he just might take another stab at the Senate in 2024.

The problem is that the Michigan GOP is currently controlled by the MAGA faction...they'll probably put up a candidate as unelectable as Tudor Dixon or Mathew DePerno.

It should be noted that Mr. James did better than Former President Trump did, in 2020. Mr. James ran against an incumbent senator, too. Without an incumbent, Representative James might be able to pull it off.

It appears that Democrats decided to sacrifice Stabenow for Murray in order to get Feinstein to retire.

One more Republican who could run for the open Senate seat - former US House Congresswoman Candice Miller.

I've already opined that she could have taken on Governor Gretchen Whitmer and defeated her back in November 2022, but she decided to remain a local official in Macomb County government. Now rumors have her seriously considering a Senate run.

Ben Sasse's resignation will be effective on Sunday January 8th. Former Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts (whose term ended on Jan 5th) continues to be the favorite to be appointed to the Senate seat by current Governor Jim Pillen though no official announcement has been made as of yet.
