Yes they did use to have a baseball team back in the days and they also use to play exibitions games against the Sun Kings the Sun Dodgers and the Diablos at the Dudley Dome, I guess they did'nt have much of a following or somthing UTEP just droped the program.

Title IX probably wiped it out, as it did many men's collegiate programs across the country. I'm no expert in NCAA policies, but I believe Title IX requires collegiate athletic programs to "equalize" the athletics opportunities available to both genders. Consequently, many minor mens programs such as baseball, tennis, golf, lacross, etc . . faced the chopping block. The school I attended up East lost its Mens baseball program as well in the 1980s. Not too sure how history will view Title IX, but I can't really say the results warrant the means. Don't get me wrong, I like womens' sports, but only if they're wearing bikinis, which is why I'm a huge fan of womens beach volleyball.

Yes, it was probably due to Title IX. Actually it all comes down to football. The amount of scholarships offered to men is so disproportionate because of football. The NCAA is trying to balance the number of scholarships given to men and women, so in order to do that, schools either cut down some of the men's sports, add more women sports, or get rid of football, and we know that this would never happen.

Default History of Baseball

I played at UTEP in 1982 and 1983 and we were part of the southern WAC conference. At that time SDSU and Hawaii were part of the conference and typically competed for the championship. The team did not have much of a following and I had heard that university couldn't support keeping it financially. I think the last year that baseball was play at UTEP was either 1984 or 1985. Too bad...the Dudley Dome, as we affectionally called it, was a fun place to play.

I played baseball at UTEP from 1967 to 1970. Pitched the first no-hitter for UTEP in 1967.

My father played baseball at UTEP (Texas Western at the time) from 1965 to 1968, I believe. His name was Adolfo Lopez II.
