So just load a music CD and see what happens. This one question/answer at a time thing isn't helpful.
When you load in the CD, some existing program is likely to pop up (you never said what version of windows you use or how old your rig is) like media Player or something and it can rip and manage your music.

This is vastly overstating the boundaries. He can put files on an iPod or other mp3 player easily and legally, and his laptop/desktop too.
I'll agree with the first, and morally agree with the second, but law isn't always about morality. It is only now we can sing "Happy Birthday" legally.

We were always able to sing that legally. Using it in a recording or in a public performance (with a specific definition) was for a long time considered something that required a license form WC, although the legal underpinnings of that were not very strong; Warner enforced via intimidation.
Don't know if this has been asked before but I'd figure it's the CD I PAID FOR so why can't I digitize them and transfer them to computer and later to my cell phone to listen whenever I want?
How?
You can download free software that is very easy to use. I use Ashampoo most of the time and have used CD BurnerXP. You just 'rip' the songs from the CDs to where you want them on your computer. They will be MP3 files which you can play or move/copy elsewhere. I've been copying my CDs to flash drives because they take up less space and play more easily in the car.
Call me ignorant. Just wanted to find a way to get started.
I get it. There are no new computers being sold today that has a CD drive. If you have an older computer that has a CD drive, you can just copy from the drive into your iTunes library. If you have a newer computer you'll need to get an external CD/DVD drive to connect to your computer.
The external drives will run you about $20 - $40 dollars or so.
