Hey all, I was looking for a thread to post about this referendum on Lexington county's penny sales tax but couldn't find a devoted thread on Lexington county stuff. So here we go...
Here's a nice article from The State about the Penny Sales tax referendum on November 8th of about 450 million (at least) to fix the roadways in Lexington county.
Here's an excerpt of some of the projects listed on the referendum:
-Corridor improvements on Meeting Street in West Columbia, including sidewalks, landscaping and parking.
-Improvements to Hope Ferry Road and Sunset Boulevard in Lexington.
-Realigning Mineral Springs Road connector to Hope Ferry Road in Lexington.
-Resurfacing Fish Hatchery Road from U.S. 321 to Friendship Court.
-Intersection improvements at U.S. 321 and Mack Street in Gaston.
-Improvements to Woodrow Street at Lake Murray Boulevard in Irmo.
One thing I didn't see mentioned was anything about the airport connector (I think it was to I-20?). I tried googling it but I couldn't find any information on it, although I recall there was a next step to improve connectivity to the airport. I understand that this would probably be extremely expensive and is more in the theoretical stage but does anyone remember the details on it?
Lexington Medical Center ranked the 2nd best hospital in South Carolina by U.S. News and World Report. The number 1 hospital in South Carolina is MUSC in Charleston.
89 hospitals were reviewed by U.S. News and World Report but only 8 met the criteria.
Additional investment in Lexington roads is desperately needed as the city has grown too fast population wise without appropriate infrastructure investments made. Least the penny tax proposal this go-around isn't filled with non-road projects, hopefully that helps it pass.

Lexington needs to put some of that money back into the COMET and bring transit back because the amount of people moving into the area with other option of travel other than Driving traffic is just gonna continue to get worst and worst until its just gonna stay constantly traffic jammed.
But if they actually offer transit like it was back in the old day then that can take many people off the road. a Downtown to Lexington BRT or Commuter Rail is needed.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Yeah, at this point even a bare bones investment would be huge since it would be better to have that than an ambitious penny sales tax that would be doomed to fail again.
The majority of Lexington county's citizens thinking falls inline exactly how my dad thinks: "Why am I going to be taxed for a infrastructure plan for things that have nothing to do with infrastructure?" Also, because people like my dad only benefit from the roads part of the plan, they see no need to pay for something that they won't use or benefit from. Lets just say the "socialist" mentality of pay a very small amount to benefit ALL doesn't resonate very well with people in Lexington county. But that's okay, that's just the way it is.
Growingup- Isn't there a park and ride in Lexington? I remember seeing one I think at the end of of Corley Mill and 378 right where they have the Lexington sign with all the palmetto trees. There is some semblance of an effort to reduce traffic so that's a good start.

I see your passion for public transit but it will be decades before Lexington residents will welcome any sort of mass transit. Just take a look at Richland county.....they have buses running over most of the county and I have yet to see one half filled with passengers (excluding special events and USC students). People I work with who would be a target for Comet all say the same thing...the problem with buses is anyone can ride and they often do not feel safe on a bus. Private transportation allows you to decide who gets to ride with you.

This is true. If you doubt it take a look at the folks changing busses at the Comet Exchange Terminal on Sumter St in downtown Columbia.
In the Columbia area it doesn’t take much to spook anyone; people feel unsafe because they have never been put in a situation where they need a bit of vigilance or where they’re the minority unfortunately. Like Lexingtondad said, it’ll be decades before it catches on.
I’ve ridden on a bus or a metro plenty of times with a much worse crowd than Columbia would ever have and as long as you keep your eyes open, you’re fine. At the end of the day, the vast majority of people are just riding a bus to get somewhere. Or other cases to kill time.
Most of it’s just in peoples heads and the fact they’re not use to being around other socioeconomic classes of people in such close proximity. It’s really as simple as that. Columbia is a city but it’s not to the point of being a real city where a punk, an amputee veteran and senior marketing manager for a multi billion dollar bank would be on the same bus (or whatever public transportation) at the same time.

Transit in the Metro was a stretch from the beginning and now if the post covid workplace is still mostly remote.. places like Lexington other cities in Columbias orbit will have even less of a reason to use it unfortunately
