I was about to say your post had Newberry written all over it, but then I saw you’re checking it out. My paternal grandparents lived there for 40+ years and owned a bakery on Main Street that faced the side of the opera house.
I would stay with them a week or two every summer. The downtown declined after my childhood, but it has reinvented itself since the opera house was restored.
It is a beautiful town that changes little population-wise census to census, with reliably right at 10,000 in the town. My grandparents are buried there at Newberry Memorial Gardens on Highway 76.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful as well. I vote Newberry.
Check out Sumter as well. Its downtown now has a formidable upscale restaurant, several cool bars, boutiques, a huge brewery with a rooftop terrace, and a Hyatt Place hotel.

Stay away for Sumter. It has a long, long way to go. Camden, Newberry, Aiken are some towns to look at.
We are empty nesters selling our home in Florida and moving to South Carolina for a change of pace and a more interesting climate.
We are looking for a historic small town with a nice main street with Southern charm. Open to living in town or rural outskirts.
Prefer older houses/neighborhoods over newer construction/developments. Schools do not matter. We both work remote so work is not an issue.
Looking at Newberry this weekend.
Any other places we should consider? Open to pretty much anywhere in the state except extreme west.
Thanks
I would second Camden, Newberry, Hartsville, and maybe Georgetown, Walterboro. I would add as honorable mentions Cheraw, Ridgeland, and maybe Conway. If you are looking for "charm" and little else in terms of amenities. You could add Darlington, Marion, Lake City, and Kingstree...
