I think that would be great in a perfect world but this is Columbia ..better yet SC
I could see the pitchforks coming out if you tried to add a lane and same pitchforks if you tried to take one away and make it a bus only lane. I think the best we can hope for is an express bus that runs from the VA hospital maybe hits the old Woodhill mall , the Ft Jackson @garners ferry then maybe somewhere on Devine Five Points then USC/Downtown each of these being a single strategic stop each. There would still be a separate local bus for more frequent stops. Even with that I wonder what the demand would be for an express bus . People love their cars here. There is plenty of parking downtown and only traffic at peak times. Then is the 5 day in office wk week back in force now or in the future in Columbia ..?
The other option though even less likely is to have that same express bus divert down south BeltLine Blvd and hit bluff Rd and work it's way up with stops at all those student housing developments to downtown/USC. Those students may fill the seats if parking is scarce or expensive in and around USC. Again not ideal but could be an option.
You made the point of how frustrating it is trying to get Lexington to think out the box ..their political leaders are also part of the same regional government that funds some of these transit ideas along with state officials that may have a similar issues with transit. Then all those well heeled Columbia neighborhoods along Garners Ferry between downtown and the VA or that use it could add to that dynamic ...but we can still plan dream advocate lol
