Hi all, thinking of moving. Husband and I prefer the coast of NC. Daughter thinks the mountains around Hendersonville, Asheville. We want something on the smaller side for us. A house or condo less than 1800 Sq. ft. want one floor. For daughter, needs to be no stairs as has spinal issues.

For coast does anyone recommend either Calabash, Ocean Isle area, southport or Wilmington area as best and why for you?

For mountains, does anyone have preferences and why?

We are both retired, 71 and 70. Stairs becoming an issue for both. Husband had two knees and a hip replaced and still not great.

Appreciate all feedback. Thank you.

I really suggest Wilmington for *all* of you for the superior medical care.

I suggest the daughter not move to the mountains. While she may be OK inside a house with no stairs, she will constantly have to navigate sloping ground in the mountains. In addition, the winter weather is worse in the mountains. Imagine the daughter going outside during an ice storm, falling and injuring her spine.

In any case there are ranch houses, single-story townhouses, and high-rise elevator condominiums in Wilmington that are single story. If the OP provides a price range, I can locate some suggetions.

Thank you for your wonderful response.

We will be selling our home and will be paying for both. She is under Medicare and medicaid for disability. We have been paying her rent, but unfortunately the rent has just been increased and will continue to. The prices have gotten out of hand.

I was thinking $350,000 for us and around $200,000, for her but I don't know if we will find anything? It's scary when you know what you have but don't know what you will get. We had looked in the Ocean Isle and Calabash area about three years ago, but she liked where she was and didn't want to move. Now it seems there is no alternative. Wish we had taken the plunge then, we would have more to choose from and more time. Was hesitant about Wilmington due to crime.

These are places I would recommend in Wilmington. The Breezewood condo is on the second floor, but ones on the first floor turn up frequently. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/4...54329462_zpid/

The nearby house near Halyburton Park is great for seniors who like walking, and it is near medical offices and the hospital. It is currently a bit over you budget, but may be negotiable:

Regarding a condo at $200K for the daughter, they are possible, but I suggest avoiding ones which would be student hangouts near UNCW. This is an adorable tiny SFH which might work for your daughter, although it has front steps: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/4...54314972_zpid/

I love it because its a real community, with neighbors that care about each other. We moved here in 2011 and our house has never flooded.

Don't dismiss Leland. It's a hop, skip, and jump to Wilmington if you need to go there for medical reasons.

Thank you. Looked around there years ago. Would need to check it out again, could possibly work for us at this time.

Thanks. When we had looked a few years back, we had seen some wetter areas which made me hesitant. We need to investigate areas further. I like Brunswick county but we will have to check both countries again.
