Pending a lawsuit over moving the Binghamton (NY) AA team to Wilmington (Del), the Wilmington Carolina League team is listed in the litigation as being purchased by the Texas Rangers and being moved to Kinston's Grainger Stadium in 2016.
Would love to have baseball back in the area, but personally believe Greenville is a better long-term location for a team. I'll take another Kinston team in the short term, though.
Update: A judge has ruled that the Binghamton owner must negotiate with Wilmington's (Del.) ownership. They are going to go through mediation to either work out a sales agreement or at least an agreement on how to settle the breach of contract issue.
This development makes it more promising that Carolina League baseball will be played in Kinston next year. But even if this happens and Kinston makes all the required stadium improvements, the article states that the industry rumors that Kinston will be a temporary home until the Texas Rangers can find a more modern, permanent home for their High-A team (They've been moving it around a lot, but I think they'd prefer to stay out of the California League; so a permanent Carolina League is a better fit). This same website has a story about the possibility that, like Greenville, Fayetteville may be considering building a downtown ballpark. If they were ever a time for each of those towns to advance the discussion of building a ballpark, right about now would be appropriate.
One step closer (but not yet official). The deal looks to be longer for Kinston than initially believed - 12 years. Whether or not there are any out clauses remains to be seen.
The website lets you suggest a name for the team. I'd suggest the Tuscaroras, in honor of the Native American Tribe along the banks of the Neuse. But the way folks are leery in regards Native American team mascots these days, it probably wouldn't get any consideration.
A mudpuppy specific to the Neuse River, living right there in Kinston.
Kinston Waterdogs....sounds like a perfect minor league name to me.
