I really would love to see the widening of 264 ASAP. But would it be worth to widen if there isn't an understanding for it to be redesignated as an interstate?
Sorry. I don't think I'm understanding what will actually be done...Isn't there already a 4 lane highway "loop" (264, 795, 70, 11) ? Once they are finished doing whatever they plan on doing...will people that want to go to Goldsboro from Greenville want to drive to Wilson or Kinston, then to Goldsboro?
The only thing I can think of is that may work would be a 4 lane highway that starts near the midway point on 795 between Goldsboro and Wilson, and runs East to a midway point on Highway 11 between Kinston and Greenville(Maybe near Ayden).
Then aim to bring the things that the region wants (Sports complex, Fairgrounds, Performing Arts Center, Shopping, Industrial/Manufacturing jobs, etc.) to that central area. Decent spot would be somewhere near Snow Hill.
This way, it would be easier for all of the cities in this group to access it with the highway.

The goal is to upgrade the current roads to interstate quality. There is a belief that certain companies will not consider a city that doesn't have immediate access to interstates.
Every city brings "something" to the table, some more than others.
Since may folks are up on the NC road infrastructure, I have a question. I see on Rt. 17 near Leland there is an exit 39 that is covered up. Is that where I40 will be intersecting with Rt. 17? Does anyone know the estimated date of completion? If I travel a lot from 795 down to Southport, how much time will this new road save me?

I can't seem to find it now, but there was whole thread on road work around Wilmington posted not too long ago.

Now, IMO, they can name 264 a different ?95 that will connect to 495, intersect 95 and end in Greenville.
Interstates have to connect to each other in order to qualify. 264 currently connects to 64.

I understand Greenville's want with teaming up with the other 3 (+) cities in Quad East, but it seems like the current goal is to create interstate access between the Triangle and Tidewater, Virginia.
I wonder if there is a plan to integrate Greenville's transportation future into this planned Interstate?
