julian has been missing for over two weeks after going for a hike on a mountain range in california.
he was so wonderful in the merchant and ivory movie a room with a view. if you haven't seen this impossibly beautiful 1985 film, it would be your treat to see it. it stars a very young helen bonham carter, julian sands, maggie smith, daniel day lewis, judy dench and on and on....what a cast! it was also filmed in the magical city of florence, italy.
I am afraid that he is probably gone. I have long appreciated his skill as an actor and am sad for his family and friends as this waiting must be unbearable.
I'm not familiar with him, I saw an article a few days ago about it. Apparently one woman died on the mountain in the last week or so with another hiker that was lost who was found while they looked for the actor.
Article below is someone who's hiked with him before. Unfortunately he's working, can't go help search.
They're using some newer technology that picks up credit cards and reflective material. Hopefully he's in a cave somewhere but you never know. His brother doesn't sound too hopeful that he's alive.
Mount Baldy is an "incredibly hard hike" under wintry conditions, but missing actor Julian Sands is an "extremely advanced hiker," a friend of the actor told Fox News Digital Thursday.
"It's an incredibly hard hike with those weather conditions," said actor Kevin Ryan, who first met Sands while the two were shooting a series called "Crossbones" together. Ryan has done the hike "a number of times" and twice in the winter.*
"You're talking about six to eight to nine hours to get to the summit," added Ryan. "And when it's icy, it's very challenging. I know Julian is an extremely advanced hiker and very strong-willed. He's very, very fit. And we're holding out strong that it'll be a positive return for him."*
adding that searchers were using RECCO technology that can detect reflective material, electronics and, sometimes, credit cards.*
Ryan said he was staying optimistic rescuers would find Sands, 65, alive, following the discovery of 75-year-old hiker Jin Chung, who had been missing for two days before he was found alive. Sands has been missing for 13 days*
Chung "suffered some weather-related injuries and a leg injury but was able to walk out with the assistance of the crew members," the department said.*
He said Sands always heads out on a hike prepared with everything he needs in his bag.
I wouldn't think of climbing Baldy in January. And certainly not in sketchy weather and/or solo. Not that I'm opposed to solo hiking - I'm not; that's how I spend most of my time on the trail - but it's a matter of time and place.
The shame of it is, the area is full of fantastic hiking at lower elevations. As it happens, I spent several days in the San Gabriels in January of 2022, even going on a long-ish (~10 miles) backcountry hike maybe five miles from Baldy. But it was at much lower elevations, with no worries of a winter storm.
His remains will be found eventually, probably in the spring.
Mount Baldy is included in an area that is under a blizzard warning effective most of Friday (tomorrow) and Saturday. The forecast calls for 2 to 5 feet of snow above 4000', with the potential for up to 8 feet.
This is where Sands disappeared. All trace of him will be buried for weeks at least.
