Hey campers! I’ll be pulling a 28’ travel
Trailer, 9,800 lbs, across Texas and Oklahoma via the I-40. Does anyone know if I have to stop in at the weigh stations or do I just go on by? I’ll
Be in a full size pickup with gear in the truck bed as well.
Private vehicles used for recreation are not usually required to stop at commercial weigh stations / port-of-entry. If your vehicle can be easily mistaken for a commercial vehicle, you are best to label it "not-for-hire" and drive through, but not required to stop and file paperwork.

RVs are exempt from regulations, unless they are being delivered by a company to the dealership or customer. That is the only time they will be regulated.
Some will have a sign indicating weight station and will have an “RVs excluded.”
No, there is no need to label your rig “Not For Hire.” Not for hire doesn’t always exempt you from all the regulations. In fact it will sometimes draw extra attention to you.
when I lived in Oklahoma (many years) I pulled an RV all over the state and into Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama and Georgia. Never had to pull into truck weigh station.
I HAVE seen Highway Patrol stop RV'ers and check their weights on portable scales but not in truckers weigh stations.

I do check on the outfits delivering the RVs. Some roadside screening equipment cannot differentiate being a private RV and a commercial carrier and may flash a sign for the vehicle to exit to the weigh station. Those results will vary by jurisdiction.
