I don't try to sleep in rest areas, they are too noisy and busy. I usually go to a Love's truck stop and ask if it's okay to sleep in the vehicle for a while. Usually they have overnight security due to the truckers.

First thing on my list always: pillow! I actually bought a small travel pillow but it was smaller than expected and well, feather pillows pack well
I had a lightweight cover that I tossed over the entire car, but I couldn't use it the last night that it rained (not that it was very light the next morning with the rain)
