Elk, and deer are NOT harmless. An elk killed a woman in her own yard during rutting season. They can become quite aggressive at that time. Do not approach.

Don't forget the coyotes in town But yeah, rutting deer were what I was most wary of hiking up in the mtns.

Oh, absolutely on both counts. Both have lost their fear of man. And when rutting deer aren't scared of much anyway, lol. Here are the results on coyote attacks in Colorado. And the other results includes the famous video of a buck attacking a man. For those that may think this is just a Colorado thing, it can happen anywhere.
