Ok, I'm desperate for a book or books (or even dvds really) for my FIL.
He has, in the past few years, become fascinated by people who, for example, build log cabins or sail the world to get away from it all.
He's not a conspiracy, hoard guns and build bunkers, type. He's more interested in people who try to live like pioneers, or even historical books on actual pioneers.
It must be non fiction, and biographical if recent or documentary if historical.
He does watch some YouTube videos of people documenting their efforts, which is why dvds would be ok.
Any ideas? The man is so hard to buy for for Xmas ...
Ask for suggestions under the Self Sufficiency and Preparedness subforum. In fact, I seem to recall a thread about this very topic not too long ago. A forum search might bring some up.
In 1965, 16-year-old Robin Lee Graham began a solo around-the-world voyage from San Pedro, California, in a 24-foot sloop. Five years and 33,000 miles later, he returned to home port with a wife and daughter and enough extraordinary experiences to fill this bestselling book, Dove.
Maybe the Jon Krakauer books Into the Wild about Chris McCandless, who was found dead on a abandoned bus in the Alaskan wilderness, or Into Thin Air, about a disastrous Mt Everest climb. He also wrote a book about Pat Tillman, but I haven't read that one.

The Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel. Nonfiction.
A hermit lives in the woods in Maine, near a camping resort. He survives their brutal winters living in a tent, and doesn't light a fire because he doesn't want to attract attention.
He survives by sneaking around in the resort and stealing food, and became kind of a legend.
Myself, I was pretty irritated at him because he's NOT a hermit living "off the grid", he goes years (I think maybe a decade) stealing from vacationers. But he had some interesting ideas on how to stay hidden.

i thought about recommending that one, but since he steals all the food he eats for 27 years in hiding, it didn't seem like a very good fit here.
Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I've a few books he might like!
