I finished The Witch Elm. I was so absorbed in it that I didn't want the book to end. Not only does she draw you in with her characters, the story is captivating. French is a very talented writer.
I want to share this author with anyone who loves good mysteries. Tana French writes about a fictional Dublin, Ireland murder department. It has a rotating cast of characters. You meet some who you encountered in other books, and the stories are told from differing viewpoints in every book.
These are meaty reads with lots of character development, with a bit about Ireland and Dublin as well.
One of her continual motifs is friendship and work partnerships. Her portrayals of good work partnerships are always insightful and a little idealized. And what is working well often is fleeting, much as it is life.
The mysteries are real. They are interesting.
Here is a list of her books. I'd start at the beginning. Tana French - Books
The last of these is her first, which won an Edgar for Best New Book in 2008.
I hope you enjoy these as much as I have. I still have a couple more to read. So looking forward to reading them.
I absolutely love Tana French. She is a wonderful writer who does beautiful things with words but also always has a twist to surprise the heck out of you.
I have been addicted to Irish archeology, folklore, poetry and fiction since very early teens. And in recent years I read some of John Banville's novels, and then onto his alter-ego, Benjamin Black, who writes mysteries...all but two, as I recall, with interconnected characters.
...and this led me to look for other Irish mystery writers. My first trip beyond Benjamin Black's books was In the Woods. I was delighted at first because it was a natural for me, having an Irish archeology backdrop, and a current one at that...I read up on the archeological finds that result from Ireland highway development program. But somewhere along my read I truly began to get downright uncomfortable - the turns and revelations were both subtle and horrible. The final resolution for all the characters left me feeling really disturbed, and anxious - as if the obvious rather awful future possibilities were real life possibilities.
I borrowed In the Woods (Dublin Murder Squad #1) after reading this thread and am about 3/4 through. Good reading so far. The series has a bad#$$ name.
French has a new one coming out this fall, The Searcher. She has a way of making the reader think about her characters long after the book has been finished.
I find myself thinking about French's books, and wondering when she'll come out with a new one. So far, she hasn't said. Her books in order, with a short description of each:
