According to NBA insider Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer, Gordon Hayward’s time with the Charlotte Hornets is up. The Hornets will either trade Hayward or agree to a buyout agreement with him. “Should nothing materialize, Hayward would be a buyout candidate, giving another team the opportunity to bring him at a much lower salary number,” Boone wrote. “Following (Terry) Rozier’s departure two weeks ago, league sources suggested that was the most likely outcome. But there is apparently a small market for Hayward. Either way, one league source indicated Wednesday that Hayward’s time with the Hornets is up. ‘He’s gone,’ the source said.”
The Hornets have officially waived veteran guards Ish Smith and Frank Ntilikina, the team announced in a press release. Charlotte has now cut three backcourt players since the trade deadline, having also parted ways with James Bouknight.
The Hornets needed to make a series of cuts in order to accommodate their deadline deals. Dropping Smith and Ntilikina allowed the team to take on three players while sending Gordon Hayward to Oklahoma City.
The Charlotte Hornets have found their new coach, hiring Boston Celtics assistant Charles Lee, the team announced Thursday.
Lee has been an NBA assistant coach for the past 10 years and joined the Celtics’ coaching staff for this season. Before that, he was an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks (2018-23) and Atlanta Hawks (2014-18), serving with former Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer in both Milwaukee and Atlanta. He has no previous experience leading his own team and, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Lee’s deal is for four years. The Hornets said Lee will be introduced at a news conference after the Celtics playoff run.

That is a good hire for the Hornets.
