They got above .500 with 4 straight wins; the final 2 games against the Phillies, and the first 2 games against Arizona. Luis Arraez had the first cycle in Marlins history, and so far the Arraez for Lope trade is looking like a win-win for both teams as Arraez is top 5, if not number 1 in the league in hits, and Lopez is anchoring the Twins rotation with a sub 2 era. The downside of the Lopez trade, Jesus Luzardo is really showing his promise, and with Lopez they'll still have a pretty good top 2 in the rotation and that's because Sandy Alcantara has been lit up like a Christmas tree in his last 2 starts.
They have the Giants coming in for 3 beginning on Monday night before they go on the road to Cleveland on Friday.
4-2 this week winning series against the Giants and Guardians. Two not good teams, not bad either, but 2 teams they might have lost to last year, so this is a promising sign. 4 games in Atlanta to begin the week, and than the Cubs come down to South Beach for a weekend set.
Best case scenario: Well, year 1 for Skip Schumacher could prove to not be a fluke as the Marlins once again finish in the top 5 in 1 run game wins, Jazz Chisholm stays healthy and produces all season, Jesus Luzardo is a CY-Young candidate, and A.J. Puk has a smooth transition to the rotation.
Worst case scenario: Well, they were so good in 1 run games last year, and usually those things tend to even out from year to year. Sandy Alcantara will be out for most if not all of the season with an injury, and their closer last year (Puk) is now a part of the rotation.
Prediction: They’ll need almost everything to go right in order to finish top 2 in the division and just too many question marks for them. 4th place in the division with a 70-92 record. First of 4 games starts on Thursday vs. the Pirates. Mitch Keller (13-9, 4.21 in ‘22) starts for the Pirates while the Fish hand the ball to Luzardo (10-10, 3.63 last season) with first pitch slated for 4:10.
Ke’Bryan Hayes had a 2 out double in the first, Andrew McCutchen walked, but Henry Davis lined out to 3rd. Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked to start the second, a Jake Burger single oved Chisholm to 3rd, Chisholm scored and Burger went to second on a Pirates error with Jesus Sanchez batting, Tim Anderson in his Marlins debut doubled to score Burger and oved Sanchez to 3rd, but Mitc Keller limited the damage getting Nick Gordan to line out, Nick Fortes to pop out, and Luis Arraez to fly out, and the Pirates tied it up in the next half of the inning when Bryan Reynolds homered following a walk to Connor Joe. Josh Bell singled to start the 3rd, he was erased on a Bryan de la Cruz fielders choice, Chisholm doubled advancing de la Cruz to 3rd, Burger followed with a 2 RBI single advancing to second on the throw home, but he was thrown out at 3rd in a run down on a ball hit to the pitcher, Sanchez stole second with Anderson batting, but Anderson ended the inning with a strikeout. Bell walked to lead off the 5th, moved to second on a de la Cruz single, Chisholm flied out advancing Bell to 3rd, and he scored on a Burger sac fly to make it 5-2. Reynolds walked to lead off the Pirates 6th, Hayes followed with a single, following a strikeout Davis reached on an infield single to load the bases, but Andrew Nardi retired the Pirates by striking out Oneil Cruz and Jared Triolo. The Pirates would cut into the lead in the 7th though: Edward Olivares pinch hitting for Rowdy Tellez lead off the inning with a home run to cut the lead to 5-3, Michael A. Taylor followed with a single, Reynolds had a ground rule double 2 batters later, Hayes walked, McCutchen had an RBI ground out to make it 5-4, before Davis ended the inning with a strikeout. Bell started the bottom half with a hit by pitch, 3 batters later Burger singled, but Ryan Borucki struck out Avisail Garcia pinch hitting for Sanchez to end the inning and then Cruz took the 2nd pitch Sixto Sanchez threw over the wall in left-center to tie the game at 5. Joe walked to lead off the 9th, 2 batters later Hayes walked, but McCutchen struck out and Davis lined out to end the inning. With Davis on second as the ghost runner to start the 10th (made the last out of the prior inning), Cruz struck out, Triolo reached on an error, but the Fish were able to gun down Davis at home plate, Jack Suwinski was intentionally walked before Taylor ended the inning with a fielders choice. Chisholm was intentionally walked to start the inning, but Burger grounded into a double play, and then Garcia grounded out to end the inning. Joe started the inning with a ground out that moved Taylor to 3rd, Reynolds grounded into a fielder’s choice which got Taylor thrown out at home, and then Hayes ended the inning with a strike out. Anderson started the bottom half with a ground out to move Garcia to 3rd, Vidal Brujan was intentionally walked, and Jonah Bride ended the inning with a double play. McCutchen struck out to start the 12th, Davis lined out, Cruz was intentionally walked, before Triolo singled to score Hayes for the games final run. Arraez grounded out moving Christian Bethancourt to 3rd, Bell grounded out, and de la Cruz flied out to end the game. Keller allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 2 walks (1 hit by pitch) and 3 strikeouts in 5.2. Luis Ortiz (1-0) allowed 2 walks in 2 hitless innings for the win, and Jose Hernandez (1st save) had a 1-2-3 inning for his first career save. Jesus Luzardo allowed 2 runs on 2 hits (1 home run) with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts in 5 innings. George Soriano (1st hold), Nardi (1st hold), and Anthony Bender (1st hold) combined to allow 2 runs on 5 hits (1 home run) with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks in 2 innings, Sanchez (1st blown save) allowed 1 run on 1 hit (1 home run) in 1 inning, and Declan Cronin (0-1) allowed 1 unearned run on 1 hit with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in 3 innings.
Game 2 of the series is on Friday: Martin Perez (10-4, 4.45 in ’23 with the Rangers) starts for the Pirates in his Pittsburgh debut while the Marlins give the ball to former closer A.J. Puk (7-5, 3.97 last year) with first pitch scheduled for 7:10. Because of rainouts with the Mets, Phillies & Braves, the Nats were the only other team in the division that played today and they lost to Cincinnati 2-8. So the Braves, Mets & Phillies are tied for first at 0-0 while the Marlins & Nats are tied for last a half game back at 0-1.
One of only 2 teams that are winless, the other being the Mets. They blew 2 of the 4 Pirates games: a 5-2 lead on opening day and then scored 5 runs in the first inning of the Sunday game and preceded to score 2 runs the remaining 9 innings as the Pirates chipped away and won in extras. It was even worse on Monday as they scored 4 in the first and than went scoreless the next 16 innings as the next run wasn't until the 9th inning of the Tuesday game as like the Pirates the Angels chipped away, and than blew them out on Wednesday. It doesn't look to get any easier as they have 6 games in St. Louis, the Cards opener and than 3 games at Yankee Stadium.
Well, at least they got 2 wins and one was against the Yankees (LOL), but the clock is ticking on the inevitable fire sale that's coming later this summer. All we can do now is just watch however many starts Jesus Luzardo has left, and just enjoy them because not much else is happening here. Lost 2 of 3 each to the Cards & Yankees, but at least they won the final game of both series. Now if they could start winning the middle or opening games...
6 home games against the Braves and the Giants coming up. I'll set the barometer at 3-3. 3 wins would involve getting at least a series win against one of these teams, neither of which they have played particularly well against even at home, and this team right now is 0-7 at home, the only team without a home win so far, but the Giants are the more likely of the 2 I think to get the series win against. 1-5 or an 0-6 and they just start opening up for business immediately, and get a maximum return.
Well, they had some fight. They did go 2-4, but Max Meyer had a fantastic outing on Saturday before getting optioned to the minors and than they had a 7-5 lead going into the 7th inning (and 7-6 going into the 9th) before the Braves beat them to win that series with a 2 out, 2 strike homer from Marcel Ozuna. Trevor Rogers was fantastic in Wednesday's afternoon game, but the Marlins just got a lone run on a Bryan de la Cruz homer and the Giants came back with sole runs in the 8th & 9th to win that rubber game and get that series leaving the Marlins, White Sox & Rockies as the 3 teams that have yet to win a series this year.
They have 7 games this week; 4 in Chicago beginning on Thursday night, and than 3 in Atlanta. I'll set the barometer at 2-5; avoid getting swept in both series should be the goal.
They did some good things in Chicago; came back in the 9th in one of the games, so would hope they would take that momentum to Atlanta. Well, not exactly. They scored 1 run in the first 26 innings of the Braves series, and than doubled that total in the 9th inning to force extra innings. Fish got a walk and a single in the 10th but because the ghost runner was eliminated on a force out at home the Marlins didn't get a run, and the first pitch Tanner Scott threw in the bottom half went for a double and a Braves walk off. So, they did go 2-5.
Following an off day Thursday they've got another 7 day week; 4 at home in a wraparound weekend series vs. Washington and than 3 at home against Colorado. If they want any chance of salvaging anything this season this is a week they have to have a winning week. They beat the Nats around like a pinata the last 2 seasons after getting beat around by them the prior 10 years, and the Rockies are the only other team in the NL that hasn't gotten to 10 wins yet. Anything less than 5-2 and it's over for them.....if it's not already over.
It's great what can happen when you can play someone your own size! Marlins get their first series win of the season, their first sweep of the season, their first winning streak of the season. Yes, it comes against the Rockies, but when you come into the series 6-24, you take what you can get! Game 1 started in a fairly inauspicious start where the Rockies scored 5 runs in the first. It would stay scoreless all the way to the 9th inning where the Marlins would score 5 runs to tie the game. Rockies scored 1 in the 10th before the Marlins scored 2 in the bottom half to win it. They never trailed in the Wednesday game, and came back from an early deficit to win Thursday and sweep the series. Braves are in first, Phillies are a half game back, Mets are 5 back, Nats are 6 back, and the Marlins are 13 back.
Series on Friday starts in Oakland. their goal should be to win 1 game, Oakland is playing a lot better than what people thought they would be and have a potential all star in closer Mason Miller who throws 100+.
Well they are officially open for business as Luis Arraez is now a member of the Padres acquired on Friday for 3 minor leaguers, but they were still able to get 1 win, in the series finale. The West coast road trip continues with 3 games @ Dodgers stadium, and than they head home and get 3 games against the Phillies. The Dodgers & Phillies could quite possibly be the 2 hottest teams in baseball at the moment. Phillies have won something like 16 of their last 19 games, while the Dodgers have won 11 of their last 13 which includes a sweep of the Braves this past weekend. However, the Dodgers have been known to play down to their opponents level; last year they lost 6 of 7 games to the Pirates, and earlier this year lost a home series to the Nats, so maybe the Fish will catch them napping. And they've done fairly well against the Phillies dating back to the Covid year. I'm expecting 0 wins this week, but maybe they'll surprise and they'll manage to snag a win or 2. Phillies are in first, Braves are 2.5 back, Nationals are 6.5 back, Mets are 7.5 back, and Miami is 14.5 back.
