Such a beautiful city, with so much going on...

And yet another recent visit from three months ago:

I've been to maybe 15-20 different Mainland Chinese cities, and I keep coming back to Zhuhai being one of the most interesting ones. It really should be in the Top 10 of China.

Lots of Chinese cities are interesting. I saw pictures of Zhuhai on Google Street View and inside some stores and restaurants. Nice and very clean.
Lots of green and interesting architecture. Nice looking beach.

I also liked Suzhou.

I did not know that Zhuhai is a city; I mixed up it with Zhuhai Delta; i had to look up the map.

I have not had time to watch the second youtube yet, but the first one shows the city well, with modern architecture and infrastructure. With bullet train tickets as low as $3 - $5 from Shenzhen, HK, Guangzhou ..., it is a real bargain to visit.

It looks like any random Chinese city with a thousand empty apartment blocks.

Zhuhai is quite new and grown rapidly (like many cities in China). I don't have a good handle on its physical layout despite visiting about 5 times now. But usually it's just on a day trip, and being chauffeured around by our friend so I'm not super focused on the geography or transportation infrastructure.

We've done several tours of the Hengqin area where China's focusing incentives and investment for tech/startups. I've visited several of our friends' offices/businesses distributed in various very new parts of the city. Got an introduction and tour of the housing incentives for Macau residents. I went to see another friend perform at one of the grand recital halls in more of an older downtown-like area. But overall it just feels very sprawly and spread out.

Albeit I don't know Shenzhen or Guangzhou that well, I imagine Zhuhai probably is similar but maybe a couple decades behind.

Shenzhen is very sprawly with very wide roads throughout including downtown. Cocomall seems to be the centerpiece which is basically a mall that is downtown connected by trains. The moment you walk out of the mall, you are just wondering where you can walk to from there.

Guangzhou is a proper city with a long history though. Very walkable everywhere.

I think what makes Zhuhai nice is the beach. I think it's kind of a mess near the Macau border. It just looks ugly and not so well laid-out. That being said, there are parts of Zhuhai that are spectacular, which the above videos captures really well.

Other than Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, what's there really in Zhuhai that really stands out? There are some beaches also, but it's not like they're anything special.

And depends on the visitor demographics also. A westerner visiting China is probably way more interested in its history (so that would mean Beijing, Shanghai, or Nanjing/Suzhou), nature (somewhere around Yunnan / Kunming, Zhangjiajie, etc.), and things like panda (so Chengdu).

And even for somebody looking for a day trip from, let say, Hong Kong, they would go to Shenzhen first (things like electronics market, or the random cheap Chinese food) or Macau (colonial buildings albeit in concrete jungle, casinos). Still don't see why somebody would head further into Zhuhai.

P.S. I can easily count 10 places above Zhuhai...

Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Kunming (I'll just put Lijiang in here also), Dayong/Jiuzaikou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Dalian, Qingdao, Xi'an...just from the top of my head

The housing incentives are offered to Hong Kong residents as well.

The Shell theatres and the Zhuhai Opera House

I see that as well, with Hengqin in particular. It seems so far for Hong Kong residents to commute though, unless the intention is for them to retire there? But I would assume they could retire there anyway?

Those housing incentives are something I don't full comprehend why someone from Hong Kong would want to be based in Hengqin/Zhuhai. But it's interesting that they are doing it though.

Well, I guess one way to think about it is what are the other Chinese cities you'd recommend to visit before going to Zhuhai. In regards to beach destinations, people would probably recommend Sanya and possibly Hong Kong and Qingdao before recommending Zhuhai, and I don't think a beach vacation in general is what comes to mind for most people when visiting China. Zhuhai isn't particularly historic nor a particularly major economic center or cultural center. The walking video is nice, but this also looks like the kind of development that you see in a lot of Chinese cities at this point.
