O.K., you are on my calendar. Is there anything in particular you would like to see?

I want to see something cool (old cemetery, old house, etc) without having to walk a million miles to get there. I don't care so much about scenery as I do about old relics/artifacts.

O.K. I have two areas in mind and both will take about an hour or so from H.S. to get to them, but no walking after we get there. One we'll drive almost to Amity before turning into the boonies to see two old abandoned cemeteries and another old but still in use. There will also be an old town site and two old buildings, one of them the "shot-gun" house I just posted. The other we'll drive to Delight then turn into the boonies and see an old (not abandoned) cemetery, the single grave I posted, a three grave family plot, and if it hasn't recently rained, a ghost town. Unfortunately there is nothing close to H.S. 'cause I don't do any exploring in that area. So, we can work something out if those sound interesting to you.

This is a memorial monument to Meriwether Lewis Randolph. We drove 4WD as far as we could then walked about another 100 yards. He was born in VA in 1810 and was the grandson of Thomas Jefferson. He came to Little Rock in 1835 and was appointed as Secretary of the Arkansas Territory and when Arkansas became a state in 1836 he started working as a land speculator. He bought tens of thousands of acres of land from the U.S. General Land Office and resold them. When he died of malaria in 1837 he owned 10,000 acres in Clark County including a 300 acre cotton farm. This monument is on his cotton farm and is thought to be near where he was buried.

Not the "ghost town" I referred to, but that could be a side trip on the Amity route if you are interested in it.

I have never been there, but I found pictures of it on Google Earth one day. It looks interesting.

Default Exploring Arkansas

These ferns are growing in a little narrow valley on the Ouachita National Forest in the Ouachita Mountains of Montgomery County. The whole thing is a seep spring and this photo does not do justice because the ferns are about chest high to me. As I walked through I didn't look down 'cause I didn't want to see the water moccasins that I suspected were in there.
