We're likely moving to ABQ area onto a bit of acreage, likely Placitas. We currently live on acreage in the Pacific Northwest, where when trees come down, my husband chainsaws them up, and we never run out of wood for our fireplace. We've got a good bit of wood now, and I was wondering if it would be worth it to bring it with us.
Of course, how to answer that question is based on the average price of a cord of wood in your area. Our wood is alder, cedar, and fir, pretty good wood for burning.
What do you pay for a cord of wood in your neck of the woods?
Firewood prices vary widely throughout the state. In some areas it's possible to gather your own firewood, sometimes the cost being your labor and transport costs. Delivered wood from a dealer will vary in price depending on the type of wood, with juniper and pinyon being the most costly normally. Most abundant wood is ponderosa pine.
Here is a good article on what to expect if buying cordwood from a dealer.
Thanks for the info on the most commonly sold woods and the laws surrounding how wood is sold. I read another relatively current thread suggesting to the OP to go collect wood, buy some land perhaps, too, so it leads me to think wood may be available more so than I would have thought given the last time I was there I saw very few trees in the ABQ area, and those I did see, were most definitely not going to be cut down without a fight!
On craigslist in my area, cords go for about $200, which is what it appears they go for in the ABQ region. Hmmmm, so transporting our wood, maybe not such a good idea. I guess our cords of neatly stacked chopped wood will just be a bonus for the people who buy our house. Lucky them!
I forgot about CraigsList, It is sometimes helpful... Some people get their firewood from Federal lands. I have never done it. My son-in-law use to do it. I does require a heavy duty truck, chain-saw and a lot of labor... I don't know all the details.
This company located in Clovis, NM isn't afraid to post their prices.
That is a 200+ mile trip to Albuquerque.... Where the user is now asking about.
