Remarks: ID BY SMITHSONIAN. A/C INGESTED BIRD ON T/O CAUSING AN ENGINE FIRE. CAPT SAW THE BIRD WHICH LOOKED LIKE IT HIT THE SIDE OF THE NOSE BELOW HIS SIDE WINDOW. THEY DEPLOYED THE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLES AND PUT THE FIRE OUT. FIRE DPET RESPONDED. FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE WING AND ENG NACELLE. ABSORBENT MATERIAL WAS LAID DOWN. METAL DEBRIS WAS FOUND ON RWY. SEVERE DMG TO ENG. A HOLE ON THE TOP AND 2 HOLES ON THE SIDE OF THE ENG COWLING LOOKED BURNT AND FRONT OF THE ENG HAS BEEN BADLY DAMAGED WITH THE FAN HAVING SHRED. SOME FUSELAGE DMG FROM METAL DEBRIS FROM ENG. LOOKS LIKE SCRATCHES. SNARGE WAS FOUND ON THE COWLING, ALONG THE FUSELAGE NEXT TO THE ENG AND INSIDE OF ENG.. ONLY 1 BIRD WAS HIT. MORE BIRDSWERE SEEN ALONG THE EDGE OF THE RWY . NO PAX ON BOARD. A/C WAS RE-POSITIONING TO ANOTHER AIRPORT.

PILOT SAID THE LARGER BIRD WAS A HERON ABOUT 4-5 TIMES LARGER THAN THE 2 SMALLER BIRDS. PILOTS WERE UNABLE TO REACT BEFORE AT LEAST ONE BIRD HIT THE A/C. THE #2 ENG IMMEDIATELY ROLLED BACK AND THE PILOTS ABORTED T/O. TWR PERSONNEL SAW A/C PARTS ON THE RWY AND RECOVERED THEBIRD'S HEAD AND WING. RT ENG COWLING AND MULTIPLE ENG TURBINE BLADES HAD SEPARTED FROM THE A/C. UNCONTAINED FAILURE. NO BIRD WARNINGS WERE ACTIVE FOR THE ARPT AT THE TIME. PHOTOS. BIRD WEIGHS BTWN 1.5 TO 2 LBS. NTSB FOUND THAT THE SPINNER HAD SEPARATED FROM THE ENG DUE TO THE BIRDSTRIKE AND ENTERED THE ENGINE RESULTING IN THE LIBERATION OF THE FAN BLADES AND ENG FAILURE.
