Remarks: ID BY SMITHSONIAN, FAA 3800. DNA. CHIPPING SPARROW. RT WING JUST OUTBD OF ENG INLET WAS STRUCK AND DAMAGED. SML DENT(6-8") IN LEADING EDGE OF HEATED SURFACE WITH SOME PARTS BEHING THE LEADING EDGE SUFFERING DMG AS WELL. A/C HAD NO NOTICEABLE HANDLING CHANGES. PHOTOS. BOTH PILOTS SAW A BIRD LARGE ENOUGH TO BE SEEN AT NIGHT AND DO NOT THINK IT WAS A CHIPPING SPARROW THAT CAUSED THE DAMAGE. SAMPLE WAS RESUBMITTED FOR DNA ANALYSIS AFTER THIS INFORMATION AND WAS STILL FOUND TO BE A CHIPPING SPARROW. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THIS WAS AN OLD STRIKE THAT OCCURRED IN THE PAST AND THE SMITHSONIAN DID NOT RECEIVE THE PROPER SAMPLE. THEY ONLY GOT 3 TINY FEAHTERS AND A LITTLE BIT OF SNARGE. WHILE IT IS DOUBTFUL THAT A SML BIRD CAUSED THIS MUCH DAMAGE IT DOES HAPPEN AND IT IS VERY COMMON FOR SMALL BIRDS TO BE MIGRATING AT NIGHT AT THIS ALTITUDE. THE PILOTS THOUGHT IT WAS SOME TYPE OF WATERFOWL.
