Remarks: AFTER APPLYING TAKE OFF THRUST I SAW A FLOCK OF SML BLACK BIRDS PAST MIDFIELD TAKE FLT. I MENTIONED THEM TO F/O WHO ALSO SAW THEM. AS WE APPROACHED THEY SEEMED TO SCATTER. JUST AS I ROTATED I NOTICED A FEW MORE BIRDS BEYOND OUR LIFTOFF POINT AND TRIED TO ROTATE A LITTLE MORE AGGRESSIVELY THAN NORMAL IN HOPES OF CLEARING THEM (BIRDS TEND TO DIVE WHEN THEY PANIC). WE HEARD A THUD TO THE LEFT AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY SMELLED BURNT FLESH. ENG INSTRUMENTS WERE NORMAL. AFTER WE CLEANED UP AND WERE CLIMBING OUT THE TWR NOTIFIED US THEY SAW A PUFF OF SMOKE OFF OUR LEFT ENG AFTER WE ROTATED. WE MONITORED BOTH ENGS, CONTACTED DISPATCH AND MX AND DISCUSSED THE ISSUE. WE DECIDED TO CONT TO MSP AND LET MX TAKE A LOOK AT THE ENG. AFTER WE DEPLANED WE SAW EVIDENCE OF STRIKE ON COWLING. SML DENT (1" X 3" AND 0.010 DEEP).WITHIN LIMITS ON ENG INLET. DID NOT NEED REPAIR.
