Tallahassee, which means "land of the old fields" in the Apalachee Indian language, still retains the feel of the Old South with its antebellum homes, historic churches, and Spanish moss-draped oaks. As the state capital, the city is a center of both government and education for the state of Florida. The number of young people in the city give Tallahassee a vitality that is somewhat different from other places in Florida with considerably older populations.
