Indianapolis: Transportation

Approaching the City

The Indianapolis International Airport is located 8 miles southwest of downtown and is accessible to the city via the Airport Expressway and I-70. Eighteen airlines schedule 280 daily departures to 38 non-stop destinations; more than 7 million passengers were served by the airport in 2003. Five other airports for smaller aircraft also operate in the metropolitan area.

Indianapolis is linked with points throughout the nation by a network of interstate highways. Intersecting the city from east to west is I-70; I-65 passes through the downtown area from the northwest to the southeast. I-69 approaches from the northeast. All of these routes connect with I-465, which encircles the metropolitan area. Amtrak offers both bus and rail service.

Traveling in the City

Public transportation is provided by Indiana Public Transportation Corp. (IndyGo), with 28 fixed routes and special services like Dial-A-Ride, Open Door Paratransit Service, and Late Night Service.
