• KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) began in 1994 when two teachers, Dave Levin and Mike Feinberg, launched a fifth-grade public school program in inner-city Houston, Texas, after completing their commitment to Teach For America. While only half of the students passed their fourth-grade tests before enrolling in KIPP, that year more than 90 percent passed the Texas fifth-grade exams in English and mathematics. In 1995, Feinberg remained in Houston to lead KIPP Academy Middle School, and Levin returned home to New York to establish KIPP Academy in the South Bronx. These two original KIPP Academies became the starting place for a growing network of schools that are transforming the lives of students in under-served communities, and redefining the notion of what is possible in public education. KIPP schools are open to all students regardless of prior academic record, behavioral conduct, or socioeconomic background. More than 88 percent of KIPP students are from low-income communities, and 95 percent of KIPP students are African American or Latino. KIPP San Antonio was founded in 2003 with the opening of KIPP Aspire Academy Middle School. Recognizing a need for increased impact, KIPP Aspire Academy leadership collaborated with the national KIPP Foundation in 2008 to open 4 more schools: a college preparatory high school, a second middle school, and two dual language academies. KIPP San Antonio will open its 5th school, KIPP Esperanza Dual Language Academy in August 2014. KIPP San Antonio is growing to provide more San Antonio students with a rigorous college-preparatory education. Over the coming years, KIPP San Antonio will grow to serve more than 9,000 students in 15 schools in central San Antonio. KIPP San Antonio is composed of 6 schools: KIPP Esperanza Dual Language Academy, KIPP Un Mundo Dual Language Academy, KIPP Aspire Academy, KIPP Camino Academy, KIPP Poder Academy, KIPP University Prep Academy.
