The East Tennessee State Innovation Laboratory is a university-associated business incubator specializing in support of new and early stage technology companies. It is unique in the northeast Tennessee region because it offers wet laboratory facilities for biotechnology and high technology companies that need this type of infrastructure. As a university incubator it also offers facilitated access to students, faculty, equipment and the libraries at East Tennessee State University including those in the Quillen College of Medicine, the College of Pharmacy, the College of Business and Applied Technology and the College of Arts and Sciences. Business support services are offered on-site by the Tennessee Small Business Development Center and by the Advisory Board to the Innovation Lab as well as access to local angel investors. Since it opened in August of 2002 the Innovation Lab has served 7 client companies which have raised more than 6 million dollars in investment capital, have created 61 jobs and, in 2006, had an annual payroll of more than 2.6 million dollars. The Innovation Lab just opened a new 11,000 square foot addition and has space for as many as 10 new companies.
