- I run what would be called in the industry a boutique landscape design-and-build business. Unlike larger firms that use design services primarily as a way to sell their plant inventory, my business starts with the desires of the individual client. As a designer, my first job is to listen to what my clients want and then to come up with a plan that can turn their ideas into something feasible for our climate and the specific characteristics of their properties. Since most nurseries only carry what sells, I frequently have to search to find the more unusual plants on our list. My clients can choose exactly what of my services they want. Some want a scale drawing and plant list that they can use to install themselves. Others want me to take care of everything. Many fall in between. I provide phone support for clients working on their own. I install fences, decks, patios, walks, arbors and ponds in addition to trees, shrubs, flowers and lawns. My installations are always organically sound. Over the years many of my clients have asked me to return to help them maintain their new gardens, so I provide this service as well.In the last 3 years, again at the behest of my existing clients, I have added an organic lawn service. We use no chemicals, use self-mulching mowers, and mow only when the lawn needs it. We don't, of course, mow in the rain like many lawn services do.The focus here, as in all our work,is the individual property and the wants of each client.
