TAMPA – Tomato Joe's Pizzera may be the
newest takeout place on the block, but don't
be fooled by the fresh paint and the clean,
inviting atmosphere. The owners, Mendi
Ismaili and his wife Nessy, are experienced
hands at the pizza trade and have the New
York-style crust to prove it.
“This is the best pizza since I left the
Bronx,” (or Queens, Brooklyn, Jersey,
Phili and other cradles of pizza perfection),
they've often heard their customers say.
Their take-out business, which features
a full menu of Italian specialties, including
regular and gourmet pizzas, calzones, soups,
salads, subs, dinner entrees, sides, plus a
Kids Menu, is located in the Zenea
Professional Center, 8130 West Waters
Avenue, on the southeast corner at
Pinehurst, just east of Sheldon Road.

Building on his apprenticeship in
authentic, family-owned Italian restaurants
in his old hometown, Waterbury, Conn., and
lessons learned in his last successful venture,
The Plum Tomato, a highly regarded Italian
restaurant located in Tarpon Springs,
Mendi's “secrets” of great pizza include:
1. Use the best ingredients you can
find. Tomato Joe's uses the highest
quality mozzarella cheese, for
example. It costs more but has a
better taste.
2. Make sure your ingredients are
fresh, including the sauce, meats and
vegetable toppings. Tomato Joe's
make its pizza dough and sauce from
scratch. Naturally!
3. Fire your generously topped pizzas
in real, brick-lined ovens to give the
pies a crisp, carbonized under-crust,
the kind pizza lovers relish.
