  • Description:
  • I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist # 49976 with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. I earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from San Francisco State University, and continue to participate in on-going advanced training and education in many diverse areas including trauma, culture, and depression. My past work experience has involved treatment of children and teenagers placed in Day Treatment and Residential Treatment Center locations in both Northern and Southern California. Currently, I am a therapist at Family Paths, Inc., working with parents, children and teenagers with various needs and concerns. The majority of my clients are people of color and of various socio-economic, religious, and ethnic backgrounds. I have extensive experience working with the following types of issues: • Trauma • Self-Esteem • Poor academic performance • Social Issues • Depression/Anxiety • Eating Disorders • LGBTQ issues • Teen pregnancy • Gender Issues • Cultural concerns • Adjustment issues • Phobias • Substance abuse My style is warm, genuine and collaborative. I strive to create a safe, nurturing and non-judgmental therapeutic environment. As a therapist, my goal is to facilitate self-awareness and change through use of interventions that are tailored to fit the needs of my clients. I often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy when working with individuals dealing with issues like anxiety and depression, to help my clients understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings and behaviors and to help them create a more balanced view of themselves and others. As a Psychodynamic therapist, I find it useful to explore the past as well as the present to bring awareness to how clients have come to be who they are and to create goals that reflect my client’s hopes for the future. I also use Relational Therapy techniques to explore critical relationship dynamics between clients and loved ones in order to recognize interactional patterns and communication styles. I am dedicated to building a strong connection and therapeutic alliance with my clients and am always open to feedback about how I can better serve their needs. I define culture as the set of shared attitudes, values, goals and practices that characterize a group of people. Culture comprises of a learned set of behaviors passed down through generations that serve a purpose, or satisfy a need for survival. Often times, culture benefits one’s developmental process by providing a reason to organize daily life with customs and rituals that provide the feeling of connectedness and sense of belonging. Many times however, cultural expectations can promote feelings of isolation, rejection and shame. When cultural expectations clash with a person’s own sense of self and autonomy, a crisis can ensue, resulting in depression and anxiety. I believe that culture plays an important role in many people’s lives. As a therapist, I work towards learning as much as possible from my client’s about the meaning that culture holds for them and explore ways that culture has affected their sense of identity and self-worth. My expertise is in working with the following issues in a cultural context: • Arranged marriage • Sexism • Gender roles/rules • Spousal/Partner abuse • Sexuality • Adjustment Issues • Family Pressure • Religion • Immigration I enjoy working with people from all genders, ethnicities, and cultural backgrounds. I specialize in working with the East Indian female population. Contact me today for a free 20-minute phone consultation to discuss how I can help you.
