- Tuxedo Rentals and Sales Open M-F 10-8 Sat. 10-5 Sun. By Appointment Jeffrey Nelson fulfilled a years-old dream by opening his first nonfranchise men’s formal wear location, The Tux Shop, at 33423 S. Woodward Ave. in Birmingham. The new shop opened its doors Jan. 3 and features the latest in men’s tuxedos, formal wear, accessories and restaurant apparel. Nelson has been in the tuxedo business for 17 years, six as an owner. The store employs three to five formalwear specialists, depending on the time of year. The store opened to a terrific reception, and sales for Auto Show Charity Preview night were up from 2009 and 2010. Nelson is already gearing up for wedding season by participating in wedding shows hosted by Whimsical Occasions. Proms are another big part of The Tux Shop on Woodward’s business — Nelson does in-school fittings at Brother Rice High School. “We have a very good relationship with our distributor, Steve Petix Formal Wear in Livonia,” Nelson says. “They carry everything you need to look and feel your best at formal occasions. Forging good relationships with vendors, suppliers and customers are the keys to success. Our five-year plan is to have our main location here in Birmingham and two franchises. “We had something rather unique happen regarding our first customer. We outfitted a tuxedo for Kermit Ambrose, the legendary track and field coach from Birmingham Seaholm High School. Ambrose turned 100 years old on Jan. 6th and his former track athletes from the ’50s and ’60s got together and threw him a 200-person party at the San Marino Club. Having my first customer celebrate a milestone birthday like that was a very nice way to launch our new venture.” Nelson believes that giving back to the community is important and he works closely with the groups by donating tuxedo rentals and gift cards to high school musicals, auctions and fundraisers, as well as participating in other community fundraisers. Nelson offers these tips when going formal: n Black tuxedos are standard. n Navy blue tuxedos are sharp. n Charcoal and light gray tuxedos are stylish and distinguished. n Bow ties, suspenders and cummerbunds are returning popular styles. With nonpleated pants, they provide a sleek, slender look many guys are looking for today. The Tux Shop provides authentic tie-to-tie bow ties with free lessons on tying them. n Vests and Windsor ties aid coordination of print and bold color in accessorizing tuxedos.
