- Jacobsen Kitchens was established in 1974 by Harold P Jacobsen. His son Stewart joined him in 1975, after a couple of years in the industry himself. Together they built their family business, not in size but in quality, and a client repeat business. Building quality custom kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets, they continued branching out into building custom office furniture, wall units, entertainment centers, floating shelves, display cabinetry and other home, office and commercial furnishings. In the later part of the 70's, a customer had asked if it were possible to laminate the existing doors and cabinets rather than new cabinets. Though Mr. Jacobsen researched, he could not find anything on it. Even to the point of asking other owners of cabinet companies their opinion. All said, it could not be done. So.. with some cabinet prep-work and some experimenting he went against the nay-Sayers. It worked. The customer was happy and the Jacobsen's found another option for customers to save some money if no other major changes were to be made in their kitchens. Back then they called it re-lam. today it is called cabinet refacing or resurfacing, and it can be done in mica , thermofoil, and wood veneer on cabinets with new doors. Also on counter tops, home and office furniture, store fixtures and many other applications. Today it remains part of their business as it does for many of the past nay-Sayers. It saves (by their figures) the customer approximately 35%. And this type of work is about 30% of their contracted work. Today Stewart M Jacobsen continues to run the family business from New custom cabinetry to refacing cabinets. And he is always looking for ways to improve, but without sacrificing the quality and keeping their repeat customer base.
