  • Sea Services has been serving the public’s need for Burial at Sea for over 15 years. It started when Gus Hald did a favor for a friend and scattered cremated remains off the coast of Long Island. Soon, many others would come to Gus and ask they could go out on his 43-foot houseboat The Determination, to scatter the ashes of a loved one. Not every request could be met because of the number of people who wanted to attend, or they had another destination in mind, but Gus being the kind hearted and helpful person he is found other charter boats to accommodate the families. Sea Services became incorporated in 1996 and has assisted families find the right vessel for their burial at sea needs, from simple canoes for 2 in Hawaii to luxury yachts for a hundred in Florida. Sea Services home base is the Babylon Marina, our port of departure for the Captain’s Service (unattended scatterings). Local charters depart from the Fire Island Inlet in Babylon, Point Lookout in Long Beach and from the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Brooklyn; reservations are required. Not only does Sea Services arrange these charters, but also councils grieving family members with advise and recommendations about burial at sea. In recent years there’s been a trend toward Green Burials, meaning burials that are more eco-friendly, such as being wrapped in cloth for a ground burial instead of a coffin. Along these lines people are now interested in Full Body Burials at Sea, where the body can be laid to rest 3 nautical miles from shore, in 600 feet deep water. In many states the voyage is 30 miles out to find such deep water, but we have vessels well suited to the conditions. In most cases family members do not board the ship, but wave good-bye from the dock. Our most recent full body burial was rather poignant, the son of the deceased called us when his mother was near death. He said his mother said she wanted to be buried at sea, but not cremated because she was a survivor of the holocaust. The burial took place about a week later off the coast of Massachusetts, and both sons attended to their mother’s final request. The captain, crew, two sons and our funeral attendants said it was the most tranquil and beautiful send-off they had ever witnessed. When you call Sea Services you’ll never get a recording; your message will be relayed in a timely manner and one of our councilors will be contacted in case of an emergency. Sea Services also offers other products such as burial urns, and keepsake pendants. Most of our business is easily conducted by phone or e-mail; generally our clients already have something in mind when they call us.
