- I help people with depression, anxiety, anger, compulsive eating, trauma recovery, and relationship problems. At the heart of all these problems is self criticism or shame - a feeling that "I'm not good enough." Together we can look at the roots of this belief. Shame and self-criticism are ways we try to protect ourselves from rejection or disapproval from others. We think that if we can yell at ourselves first, we will change our behavior and avoid being yelled at by someone we love or need. But yelling, criticism and judgement don't help. They undermine our confidence, our playfulness, our ability to be kind and gentle with ourselves. In therapy, people learn to practice self-care and self-kindness, discovering that where shame and self-criticism failed to make them happier, self-love succeeds. To quote Albert Einstein, “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
