The local chapter was originally chartered February 23, 1917, when Mrs. James H. Campbell received a telegram from Washington asking her to mobilize Grand Rapids area citizens under the Red Cross banner to assist with the war effort. Today, the Red Cross in our community is a broad based human service agency with a paid staff of 24 and more than 1000 regular volunteers. Its mission is to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies of all kinds. Now encompassing the counties of Barry, Kent, Ionia and Montcalm, the chapter offers eighteen different programs aimed at carrying out this mission. Its volunteers provide relief for local fire and flood victims, teach first aid and CPR, train lifeguards, EMTs and babysitters, educate the public about contagious diseases, convey emergency messages from local families to soldiers overseas, and transport elderly and disabled citizens to life sustaining medical appointments.
