  • This school is a part of Concord's history and tradition. After the Judo program at the Japanese American Center, The Concord School of Karate was the first Martial arts school to opoen its doors in Concord. The Concord School of Karate classes began in 1965. Chief Instructor Jim Nordlie and his teacher, the esteemed, Great Grandmaster Charles Gaylord taught these first students. One such student, James Williams, became Chief Instructor/owner around 1972 and sort of inherited the Concord School of Karate. Professor Williams teacher, now Grandmaster Nordlie was attending law school. Kajukenbo is a no frills, hard hitting, real life applicable, original mixed martial art. This is no mass marketed McDojo who supersizes and sells meaningless promotions, blackbelts and spin. Agreements are on the handshake, honor system. The teachers are accomplished, devoted martial artists with at least 30 years of regular, local, uninterrupted training behind them. Classes are small so students receive more personal feedback from seasoned instructors. More of a coop or community than a business, the black belts and students alike are a sort of martial arts family. The teachers have a heartfelt dedication to their students and it shows in the high standards of instruction. This becomes obvious when you see our students in regional workouts or martial arts events. Our low ranking color belts sadly surpass without question, far too many other high ranking blackbelts from the McDojos. Our Dojo also cares about the local charities and disadvantaged groups living in our fair city. We regularly donate our time, energy and resources to numerous worthwhile projects and people. We care about the quality of life in our community today and we hope to ensure improvements for our children in years to come. We are located near BART, Transit corridor and easily acces by car, foot, bike or bus. In addition to Kajukenbo instruction, we additionally offer instruction, workshops and programs in self defense, fitness, dance, weight training, circuit training, yoga, meditation, mixed martial arts, escrima, staff, sword, kung fu, music, movement, children's reading program, tumbling. Call or visit for current program updates.
