It all began in the heart of a young boy building tree houses in the woods surrounding his home in Minnesota. This boy, Steve Schultz, grew up as a custom cabinet and furniture maker's son, appreciating the smell of sawdust, the character of different wood grains, and dreaming of building his own home. Little did Steve know that when his family began vacationing at Horn Creek Lodge southwest of the Town of Westcliffe that the Colorado blue skies and scenic mountains would capture his heart. The seed had been planted and Steve headed home to the Wet Mountain Valley immediately after graduating from college.
He met the family of his future wife, Patti Byrne, a fourth generation descendant of the first German and Irish Colonies to settle in the valley. He discovered that Patti's great grandparents, J.P. and Barbara Falkenberg, came West on their honeymoon, homesteaded and built the first log cabin in the area.
Steve and Patti married and began their business, Byrne Construction (Patti's maiden name), in 1982 with the building of a two stall garage in town, followed by a small rustic cabin in Rosita Hills. There were times when getting started that Steve would travel to Vail, the Red Rock Canyon south of Colorado Springs, Fort Collins and various other sites to keep building experience in the trade. From refurbishing the old Silver Cliff Schoolhouse, to adding on to Colorado Mountain Bank, to custom homes and woodworking, the business has grown into one of the most respected and referred builders in today's Wet Mountain Valley. Recent/current projects include adding on to the Episcopal Church and the building of the long awaited Lighthouse Pregnancy and Resource Center.
Not only has their building business grown but their family as well. Steve and Patti have four children (David and wife Lindsay, Kathleen, Jenna, Amy) and one granddaughter Grace. Grace is a sixth generation native to the valley. They feel as if they have many more children because their spare time is full of coaching youth sports and youth ministry. And, YES, Steve and Patti built their dream home on the floor of the valley just south of town 2.5 miles on Hwy 69. Believe it or not, all the cabinets in their house are made out of the wood from the trees Steve played in as a young boy.
