Our newly remodeled, sustainable designed Pilates Studio located in the heart of the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach. Joseph Greco is the founder and owner of Pilates Studio San Diego (formerly Pilates Joe). Joe is an avid surfer, skier and has been enjoying North County San Diego living for over 15 years. Joe's journey into Pilates started in 1988 while studying for the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) certification. As part of this process, he began an apprentice program with Kineosiotherapist, Dr. Robert Gajda. During his 2-year apprenticeship, Gajda spoke of Joseph Pilates, how he had discovered Pilates in the 60's, and how he had adapted his athletic training incorporating the Pilates Method. Although Joe's path was leading him towards an NSCA CSCS designation, (athletic trainer) he discovered the Pilates Method and never turned back. After years of studying and practicing conventional strength training, Joe became the first fitness, non-dancer; athletic male to step into a Pilate's studio… and the work began. Two years later, in 1990, his new journey started under the tutelage of Juanita Lopez at the Ruth Page Foundation (a ballet school in Chicago). Suddenly, Joe went from working in a strength and rehabilitation environment to working with extremely flexible, but very weak dancers. After a year of private instruction with Juanita, she prepared Joe for his first trip to New York to meet Romana Kryzanowska. Romana is one of the few remaining instructors who studied directly under Joseph and Clara Pilates. Walking into "Drago's Gym" in the heart of New York City was an inspiration to Joe. One half of the building was Romana's studio, and the other half was Drago's gymnastic gym. As Joe worked on the reformer, he glanced over to see an 80-year-old client somersaulting on rings. What an amazing experience, back when there were only a few trained instructors teaching and the unmistakable sense of community could be felt each time you walked into the gym. When Joe found his studio in Solana Beach, that sense of "neighborhood" he had experienced at ''Drago's'' was recreated. In September of 2010, Joe will celebrate his 19th year teaching the Pilates Method.
