  • Description:
  • Picking the right music teachers is ESSENTIAL for learning an instrument properly. Bad habits learned the first time through are sometimes impossible to correct. There are 100s of teachers in Pittsburgh ripping off students and parents with pretend instruction. The main elements to look for are: 1. A teacher’s education 2. Their current teaching and performance resume 3. If they have a set, established curriculum and/or plan for helping students along the path of learning their instruments. I teach beginning to advanced lessons on almost all aspects of percussion and drumming including: snare drumming, drumset, timpani, hand drums (congas and Djembe), mallet percussion and steel drumming. My average school age student focuses mostly on snare drum and drumset but I am open to teaching any style of percussion to any age or ability level. Currently I teach at Mt. Lebanon High School for $37 an hour and Brighton music Center in the North Hills where half hour lessons are $19.50. I can also teach (and prefer to teach steel drums) out of my home in Stanton Heights for $32 an hour. I’m a graduate of Ithaca College with a Bachelors in Music Performance and have Masters in Music Performance from West Virginia University, focusing on world music. While living in Morgantown, WV, I was adjunct faculty at Alderson-Broaddus College, teaching percussion pedagogy and percussion lessons. Since I moved to Pittsburgh, I have a private studio at Brighton Music Center in addition to teaching private lessons, percussion ensemble and African Ensemble at Mt. Lebanon Percussion. I also instruct a youth steel band for the Young Men's and Women's African Heritage Association as a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts steel drum artist and am a residency artist in African music, dance and steel drumming. As a performer I work with the world music percussion ensemble Resonance Percussion and am responsible for co-writing and performing in Caribbean Traditions and Passport to Rhythm, Gateway to the Arts educational shows on the history of the steel drum and the intermixing of percussion music from all over the world. I can be heard in the traditional Caribbean sounds of Dr. Kwasi and the Islanders and the popular John McDonald and the Mango Men. I also work as an accompanist for the Mary Miller Dance Company, a modern dance company in Pittsburgh and am former member of the Umoja African Arts Company and Balaphone which specialize in djembe music from Guinea. As a set player I work for Tuika's Island Magic, a show specializing in music and dance from Polynesia and enjoy playing drum set in a variety of other local projects.
