Oriental is a suburb of New Bern, a colonial city that was the first capital of North Carolina...tour Tyron Palace and relive colonial times. Cherry Point Marine Air Station is just across the Neuse River and is the largest Marine Air Base in the world. Oriental is mile marker 182 on the ICW and is a favorite stopover for cruisers heading north and south. The Neuse River is the widest (6 miles!) river in the USA and empties into Pamlico Sound which reaches to the outer banks of Cape Hatteras and the enchanted islan of Ocracoke. The area is known for its historical significance of the pirate trade including the infamous "Black Beard" the pirate.
