I am designer turned general contractor and i am loving it. I used to work as kitchen/bathroom and interior designer in NYC for over a decade but never quiet enjoyed working for others.
Working for big contractors was a great experince and a learning curve. Many big contractors and showrooms in NYC, i am pretty sure everywhere else, have set the goal to make profits as big as possible and overlooked customer satisfaction factor that is essential in this business.
