Prairie Wind Alpacas is solely owned and operated by Ronald and Ruthann Dies. We choose to raise alpacas for our retirement years and have been in the business for four years. The alpaca is raised primarily for their fleece. It is extremely soft, warmer than wool, and hypoallergenic due to the fact that it contains no lanolin or oils of any kind. The alpaca is both a gentle and loving animal. They are inexpensive to feed and their housing requirements are quite simple compared to other farm stock. They are hardy animals if they are well cared for and their offspring are a joy to have around. They are very friendly and very inquisitive. They love to romp and play and you can spend hours just watching them. It is impossible not to fall in love with them and spending time with them is the "very best" way we know to relax away the problems of the day!

The fleece is very valuable and can be sold as raw fleece or it can be processed into yarn and many garments can be made from it. In the near future, you will be seeing more and more alpaca products in stores that carry high-end merchandise. It is the goal of alpaca owners and breeders in the United States for alpaca fiber to be as common as wool.
Another practical reason to own and raise alpacas would be as an investment at a time when other investment markets are showing great losses. While the alpaca market has suffered from the recent downturn in the economy, it is because of the ecomony and not a decline in the value of the animals. Good quality stock will still demand a good price and all indications are that they will continue to do so.
